"Something to do with Lolita"

I saw this photo in the library of congress picture collection.
"Arnold Genthe seated next to a woman friend in his studio in San Francisco".
I found the photo provocative and envisioned variations on Lolita.
In other Genthe photos I believe I have seen her

As beautiful as the photo is it has a heart
breaking technical issue. Taken around 1900 on a 5"x7" class plate Genthe or someone
tried to improve the photo by drawing on
the glass negative to lighten the shadows in the faces. Mark Preuss
The negative is unprintable at a large format but remains haunting none the less .
The altered negative prompted me to paint the image.
